London Borough of Hackney / BRAFA Totem / London Borough of Hackney
A 2-metre-tall totem stands in the newly renamed BRAFA Square, Hackney, London, honouring the philanthropic efforts of The British Reggae Artists Famine Appeal Team (BRAFA).
In response to the 1980s Ethiopian famine crisis, BRAFA raised thousands of pounds through the release of the charity single Let’s Make Africa Green Again and a benefit concert in Shoreditch Park.
Made from Corten steel, the totem is adorned with 10 vitreous enamel panels covering its upper half on all four sides. These panels feature historical accounts and photographs, with two serving as exact replicas of the LP’s front and back covers.
